The Pacifier (2005)

The Pacifier

I’ve been harassed by a bully. It was in high school and he might have been half my size. But he had three buddies that more than made up for his height. I got punched out, expelled because I wouldn’t squeal and spent the next few years in mortal fear that they’d do it again. So when I watched the tenured wrestling coach, Vice Principal Murney (Brad Garrett), pick on Seth (Max Thieriot) and push him around, I cringed. It prompted echoes of those school days and my subconscious wanted him squashed like a bug and humiliated publicly so he wouldn’t do it again. Thanks go to Shane Wolfe (Vin Diesel) who only had to but show him up as a coward and his boss Claire Fletcher (Lauren Graham) to outflank his need for the spotlight by putting him on stage as a nun.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

What would you do for love? Now suppose that the love is unrequited? Admiral James Norrington (Jack Davenport) is helping Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and others escape from the cursed pirate ship. When she asks why, after all that has passed between them in the past, he tells her that he truly loves her.

Norrington lets them loose from the ship’s brig and watches as they scramble across a tow line back to their captured ship. Elizabeth is the last to leave, and asks Norrington why he’s setting them free. He replies that he has now chosen his side, though he knows this does not absolve him of his other sins including his betrayal. He knows that he’s not going to win her heart but he’s driven to show her that he is willing to be a good man despite the fact that it may cost him his life.

Panic (2000)

Panic

What happens when you’re unhappy with your life? Some struggle through it and find a solution. Others change parts of it—job, spouse, city, etc.—to find relief from that which is causing the problems. Some see a shrink to find out whether it is them or something in their life. For Alex (William H. Macy), it isn’t quite so straightforward. He’s working in the family business with his dad Michael (Donald Sutherland). His mom, Dierdre (Barbara Bain) helped start the business and it’s all Alex has known since he was a wee sprout. No wonder he is seeing a psychiatrist. You see being employed as a killer-for-hire can be stressful. But he thinks he may have found a release after meeting Sarah Cassidy (Neve Campbell) in the doctor’s waiting room. She’s cute, perky, available and as interested in him as he is in her. This could be better for a mid-life crisis than that little red sports car.

Pulse (2006)

Pulse

Conspiracies are almost the staff of life on the internet. They’re pervasive. We see them on many sites where someone thinks that one or more someone elses have done something, are covering up some event or are out to do something nefarious. Who is doing what to whom and why? Geez, no wonder there is so much paranoia and skepticism around. Now comes a new threat. Mattie Webber (Kristin Bell) gets a bunch of messages from her dead boyfriend, Josh Ockmann (Jonathan Tucker), via electronic means. It seems that the dead want to return to our world via the internet. They’re pissed and they’re not taking any prisoners. Lots of the usual horror tropes with some pretty good effects.

Practical Magic (1998)

Practical Magic

You know how some folks always seem to suffer a degree of humiliation whenever a choice is involved? No, I don’t mean things like picking tomatoes at the grocery store. Usually it has to do with doing stuff. You get picked for the rude stuff but passed over for the cool stuff. Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) know that feeling only too well and is bummed that it happens to her. All she wants is to be chosen for the phone tree. Her sister Gillian (Nicole Kidman) wants to help but Sally know that getting picked isn’t going to happen. About the only thing worse is that she turns up naked at school without her homework.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

What sort of sign do you need to tell you that you’ve met your intended? How can you tell if it is true or just a quirk of circumstance? Captain James Norrington (Jack Davenport) of the Royal Navy is being promoted to Commodore. During the ceremony, he proposes to Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Before answering, she faints and tumbles into the bay not because she is swooning with delight but rather the corset she was wearing was so tight that she had trouble breathing.
