You Kill Me (2007)

You Kill Me

When you have one of those jobs that creeps people out, it is hard to make friends and have an usual life. You can mask what you do with euphemisms, you can pretend that you do something else or you can lie. It can lead to all sorts of problems in life like substance abuse, no marital life and few friends you can trust. How do you handle any or all of the situations that come up? One way is to get out of that job. Another is to tell all and sundry what it is that you actually do. Take Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley). He is an alcoholic hitman from Buffalo, New York who is sent to dry out in San Francisco. While working through his 12-step program, he meets and begins dating Laurel Pearson (Téa Leoni) in whom he finds someone who is understanding but ambivalently supportive of his desire to become a better person despite his chosen profession. While getting Frank back in the game, she decides she needs to learn the skills he uses such as target tracking, throat slitting and knife wielding.

Music and Lyrics (2007)

Music and Lyrics

I’m a book guy, have been for many years. But it took a movie to remind me that you can take all of the novels in the world and not one of them will make me feel as good, as fast as hearing The Temptations singing Smokey’s song about having sunshine on a cloudy day and when it cold outside, I’ve got the month of May. Thanks, Smokey.

Edison Force (2005)

Edison Force

Sometimes a choice will turn your life on its head. We may have a brief moment to decide whether to it is worth going in that direction but, more often than not, we have little idea of its consequence. Such is the decision facing Josh Pollack (Justin Timberlake), a vague newsman who wants to report on more than just the highlights of the city’s events, when he finds evidence of police corruption. He has to choose whether it is something he wants to pursue but it isn’t obvious what it will mean for him and those around him. An almost lethal beating of his girlfriend Willow Summerfield (Piper Perabo) and him by what he soon realizes are some of the corrupt cops gives him pause. Had the attack not happened, he likely would have let the story go but now he’s leaning towards investigating further regardless of the effect it’ll have.

Crank (2006)

Crank

It is always a surprise when you find out that someone close is not the person you thought they were. You sorta know that they do something dangerous but it is all rather vague. Until the day comes when they tell you what it is they do and why they do it. Eve (Amy Smart) is freaked when she finds out what it is that her boyfriend, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), does for a living and finds herself a target as the bad guys chase the two of them through a sweat shop factory, over a roof, down a fire escape and into a stoled car speeding away. Rather than being aghast at what is going on, she finds herself turned on as they race down the side streets. To satisfy her urges, she figures what Chev needs is a good wank but she refuses to finish him off for fear that he’ll roll over and fall asleep like he usually does.

Vacancy (2007)

Vacancy

I used to do quite a bit of traveling. It involved staying in all manner of hotel and motel. One I remember fondly had rooms the size of strip mall stores and all its furniture was arrayed along the wall. I could have held a floor hockey game in the middle. But at least it was clean. Not like the room that David (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox (Kate Beckinsale) occupied when stranded along some forgotten rural route. At least they had some entertainment in the form of a VCR. Sadly, they were tapes of the murders of the previous room occupants.

Gloria (1999)

Gloria

I was chatting with a neighbour and her daughter the other day. Mostly about the snow melting and how much fun rubber boots are since it is tough to get abstract with a two-year-old. She knows my first name, where I live and sorta makes a sentence once every three tries. A few days later, I was being visited by a friend when there was a knock on the back door. It was my neighbour with her daughter who apparently wanted to talk to me some more even though I must look 60 feet tall to her. She got a few sentences out before she turned shy and decided to go home. When I turned to my visiting friend, she had teared up. That’s the way Gloria (Sharon Stone) feels when she finds out that Nicky Nuñez (Jean-Luke Figueroa), orphaned when his family is murdered, doesn’t have anyone in the world to care for him or to raise him. She figures she can give it a go much to the chagrin of her family and circle of friends.
